The Dunkerque 1940 Museum
Housed in Bastion 32, a former part of the ramparts, the Dunkerque 1940 Operation Dynamo Museum tells the evacuation of more than 338,000 Allied soldiers in May and June 1940. Maps, uniforms, model boats and testimonies plunge you into that extraordinary moment. You leave in silence, slightly shaken: a mood that opens real conversations over a coffee at the exit.
LAAC and FRAC Grand Large
In the Citadelle district, the LAAC presents modern and contemporary art collections inside a park dotted with sculptures. Beside it, the FRAC Grand Large, a contemporary building with a translucent façade designed by Lacaton and Vassal, extends the experience with daring exhibitions. You cross white rooms and sea-facing terraces at your own pace, and then compare favourites.
From Môle 1 to the seafront
Between the two museums, Môle 1 and its shipyard reveal the port’s past: old cranes, cast-iron bollards and open quays. A little further, Rosendaël beach offers its horizon of ever-changing sky. On Lyad, Dunkerque members share their favourite exhibitions and seaside cafés; it is up to you to find someone to extend the visit by the water.
